Whistlestop Park Signage Appears At Six Flags Magic Mountain

By on 01/30/2011

The former Thomas Town area at Six Flags Magic Mountain is finally showing some signs of its new theme. The following pictures were taken in the park today.

As you can see from the new signs, it looks like the area will officially be called Whistlestop Park:

The former Thomas the Tank Engine train ride will now be called the Whistlestop Train:

The gift shop will have the rather generic name of Depot Gifts:

I’m not sure if this is a new sign or not. I honestly can’t remember if it was there before:

That’s just sad to see, it looks so bland. The Thomas theming was so much better. I wish they had sold the area off instead. If Six Flags is throwing in the towel on young families then just be done with it. Thomas was the main draw for my family, but with it again, we’ll stick with Disneyland, Knott’s and Legoland.

I somewhat agree with you. It seems to me that they really wanted to make the park more family orientated, but I’m not sure that it paid off for them. They still have Bugs Bunny World for the little folks, and they are adding the Road Runner Express roller coaster in there now, so they haven’t completely given up on families yet. However, if large, fast, state-of-the-art coasters are really what brings in the crowds, and the associated revenue, then you really can’t fault them for going in that direction. Now that they are regaining the Roller Coaster Capital of the World title this summer, it makes sound business sense to play off of that and run with it. We spent a lot of time at Disneyland and Legoland when my kids were little, but they are more interested in the bigger coasters now that they’re entering their teens. You might as well cater to the market that you’re going to make the most money from, right?

I disagree completely with these guys. Thomas Town was a huge disappointment from the start, and I have a 4 yr old and a 6 yr old, huge Thomas fans. First of all, they dropped 2 rides that are standard for Thomas Town, one of which was Harold the Helicopter. The Thomas ride is very short. There was never anything to it. My kids were like, “so this is it?”.

MM is NOT giving up on families. The new coaster in Bugs Bunny World proves that. They never committed to doing a good job on Thomas Town, so I’m glad to see it gone, along with all the overpriced Thomas merchandise.

What really made us sad was that they removed those great antique cars to put Thomas in. We want them back! But at any rate, MM is getting more family friendly all the time. Keep it up!

Well, the change of Thomas Town to Whistlestop just means that my family will not bother to visit 6 flags. before moving to richmond, we’d been planning on a weekend trip up to Baltimore. We’re going to scratch that and just ride the “train” at Busch Gardens Instead. The themed rides would have been awesome for my family of 2 little boys. Alas.
