Microsoft Kinect Previewed At Six Flags Magic Mountain

By on 08/29/2011

As I was walking through Six Flags Magic Mountain yesterday, I came across a small sign in the midway on the backside of the park that really caught my eye:

Knowing what a Kinect was and recognizing the colors, I figured this was something I wanted to check out. As I walked past the rock climbing wall, towards Riddler’s Revenge, it didn’t take long to spot “the experience” they were talking about:

Microsoft had two large display units setup to promote the Microsoft Kinect for xBox 360. Kinect is an add-on device for the xBox that lets you play video games without the need for a controller. Instead, it uses cameras that translate your body movement into input that would normally be provided via a controller. For example, to hit a tennis ball you would just swing your arm as if you were holding a racquet. It’s that simple.

These displays were letting park guests play several new Kinect games that have not yet been released to the public. Scheduled to be released on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, the company is using the touring demos as a way to gather feedback on the beta versions of their software. The company then takes that information and tries to improve the games as much as possible before shipping the final version.

This promotion was actually being ran by GMR Marketing, an event marketing and sales promotion firm that was either hired by or is a subsidiary of one of Microsoft’s Public Relations firms. They have a total of four of these trailers. These two trailers were in the Magic Mountain park through the weekend and were then heading to Denver.

You wouldn’t ever see this at Disneyland! Ha-ha.
