Trip Report For 12 Feb 2012
A full week has passed since my last visit and there continues to be lots of changes in the air at Six Flags Magic Mountain. It was another absolutely gorgeous day in the park, as you can see in this first photo. I usually like to start my day at the top of the Sky Tower, but it’s been closed for almost a month. It’s due for it’s annual inspection and will remain closed until the manufacturer can get out to inspect and sign off on it:
The Johnny Rockets Shakes & Fries that was located adjacent to Six Flags Plaza has been de-branded. The Johnny Rockets Express located in the Colossus County Fair section of the park is still there. I forgot to check the Johnny Rockets Shakes & Fries located in the very back of the park in Cyclone Bay. There appears to be a movement underway to remove all of the Johnny Rockets from the Six Flags parks, although all three locations were still listed on the Six Flags Magic Mountain web page as of this writing. There has been no word from the park about this change or what the re-branded locations will be called. Here is what the entrance to the plaza location used to look like:
And here is what it looks like as of today:
Speaking of food, the Food, Etc location under the Superman tower is getting a makeover. It still looks the same on the outside:
But parts of the inside are being completely remodeled:
The freestanding sushi and ice cream businesses, which are not located along the kitchen wall, are still open for business and were not affected. Everything else was closed down. Although there is no word as to what type of food will return in this space, it should be back open for business in roughly 3-4 weeks. I also learned that when it does re-open, alcohol will now be served from this location, making it the second location in the park, along with Mooseburger Lodge, to serve alcohol:
Still no signs of any Lex Luthor: Drop of Doom ride pieces being in the park, but work is starting at the base of the Superman tower. The area has already started to be cleared and a couple of work trucks could be seen in that location:
I also spotted what appeared to be a couple of ropes hanging down from the Superman tower and tied off to a tree. No idea what these are for. Also looks like a fresh cut branch, likely to make room for the construction that’s about to start:
No changes in the former Metro monorail station area since last week, other than a new chain link fence and some barricades that were installed around it:
Progress continues on the demolition of the former Log Jammer ride. Here is what the former queue area looks like. I think what makes me the most happy about this is that it means there will no longer be a Warehouse 13 scare maze during Fright Fest:
Lots and lots of earth being moved around:
It’s interesting to see how little really went into a flume ride that was built 40 years ago:
Not much left of the initial lift hill:
This was the tranquil area of the splashdown lagoon, where unsuspecting riders were doused by the water canons before floating back into the station:
Not much left of the splashdown lagoon, but you can start to see how much space there is to install something really big:
When was the last time anyone saw this much of Gold Rusher from the front of the park:
Whatever they have planned for this space, it’s starting to look like they are going to keep what’s left of the Log Jammer station and perhaps re-purpose it for the new ride:
The monorail beam was cut just above where Log Jammer passed underneath it:
They removed the monorail all the way over to where is passes over the top of the former Johnny Rockets in the Six Flags Plaza:
Here is a short video showing what the former Log Jammer area looked like today:

Out of curiosity… no work on the Deja Vu lot? Or did you forget to check? Thanks!

The queue is still standing, but the dirt lot is just sitting there empty.

Okay, that’s how it was when I went in January. Thanks!

Personally, I think the Deja Vu area will sit vacant for awhile. Combining that with the area where Mr. Six’s DanceCoaster was supposed to go will create an area large enough for a good sized attraction. But I wouldn’t expect anything there till possibly 2013 or 2014. What we do know:
2012 – Lex Luthor’s Drop of Doom, already underway. Haven’t heard about anything else, but if there was, the area(s) it would be going into would already be in the clearing stage.
2013 – Rumor that some sort of launched coaster will be going into the old Log Jammer area. Seems likely, but still a rumor at this time. Of course, something could go into the Deja Vu/DanceCoaster area in 2013 instead, and 2014 will be a new coaster in Log Jammer’s area. We’ll just have to wait and see.
One thing to keep in mind is that the Shock Wave stand-up coaster was taken down in 1988, and was left vacant till Psyclone opened in 1991. A cleared area can stay cleared for a few years.

That’s what I’ve thought! But I could see it sitting empty for years… just as the Flashback site has!

I walked by it, but didn’t see anything out of the ordinary. You can’t really see over or around that construction wall. That area needs to be checked from the Sky Tower, which is currently closed. The park has struggled for a long time to make that area really viable. I wouldn’t be surprised to see it sit idle for a few years while they come up with a plan to go all out and completely revitalize that entire corner of the park and make it the happening place to be.

We’ve heard that Johnny Rockets Shake and Fries will be changed to Totally Kickin’ Chicken. The walk in restaurants will remain for now.

I’ve never actually eaten at it, but isn’t the Johnny Rockets I have a picture of above a walk-in?

Why is so much work going into removing Log Jammer, instead of constuction on Lex Luthor: Drop of Doom? Makes me wonder what will go into Log Jammer’s spot next year, or possibly even later this year!

What was funny is how back in 1971 when the park opened, you could easily see both Log Jammer and Gold Rusher from out in front of the park. Over time, the foliage filled in and hid both of them. It was even hard to see Log Jammer when you were standing right by it because it was so well hidden.
I have no clue what’s going in that spot, but with five or six acres (estimate), I’m sure they can squeeze something really decent in there.
Believe it or not, I actually considered taking a trip out to SFMM today, but decided to hang out at home and get some stuff done. Most likely, I won’t get back there till next month sometime. If I plan it in advance, Kurt, I’ll contact you and we can meet up there. I know you’d like to pick my brain about the park’s history, and I’m glad to share what I know.

While they have the equipment in there, please Six Flags, just FINISH OFF THE MONORAIL!!
I hope they remove more of the vegetation on the hillside around Gold Rusher behind the restaurant on the summit. It would be cool if they reopened that place when they finish building whatever it is they are doing here. It overlooked the Log Jammer area, and if a new ride was there, that place would have such a nice view!
When is the tower supposed to reopen?

No official date from the park, but all sources are pointing to a May opening.

Seriously they need to finish off the Metro. It’s not really hurting anything but like you said, you might as well take it down while you have the toys out!(;

Thanks Kurt, I can’t believe how different it looks without Log Jammer and its lake! Now I think I’m more excited for the new ride than I am sad about Log Jammer leaving.

2 more things from today: Green Lantern vehicles are being slightly modified and Apocalypse no longer has pictures. The camera and photo equiptment have been removed from the ride. Deja Vu’s area hasn’t changed at all (saw from Apocalypse).

They have such an amazing opportunity to put in something amazing here. They could use the majority of the log jammer area have it go through the mountain in the tunnel that already exists from the formerly running monerail have it turn around and go back over the mountain. I’m sure whats going here is going to be very fun and unique but personally i wouldnt mind seeing this spot empty and waiting 2 or 3 years for them to afford a coaster that could use this type of land properly and that would be a total one of a kind experience. Everyride is just so the same to me. loops and loops and more loops. Whether im sitting down, standing up or flyin its all the same to me i’m just getting thrown upside down. Give me something tall and fast..

I just left the park early but when I was there, I saw two guys surveying/checking electrical boxes at the LJ spot. I started talking to one of them about the park and we eventually got to what was going into the area. He said he had heard it was a coaster taller and longer than Goliath and it was to be built by the same people that did Green Lantern and LL:DOD (he really said the last two new rides including the one being built on Superman). Hope he’s telling the truth and it’s what I’ve been praying for….Intamin Giga-Coaster
