Six Flags Magic Mountain Trip Report 07 Apr 2012

This is my Six Flags Magic Mountain trip report from 07 Apr 2012.

Over the winter, I became very spoiled by having the park virtually empty when I made my weekly trips each Sunday morning. With the 2012 season now officially open, and it being Spring Break for the local schools, I’ve noticed the park has been rather busy this past week as I drove by it each day. However, I decided to brave the crowds and venture over on the last Saturday of Spring Break to check out what was going on.

The very first thing I noticed when I arrived was that they were running three trams; two green trams and the blue Skittles tram. People were not having to wait very long:

Almost all of the ticket booths were open and busy. A far cry from just a few weeks ago:

A very good sign – other than Superman, no major rides were showing as not operating:

When I was up by the Sky Tower, it looked like they were getting ready to open it up. I asked and they said it might be opened later in the day if the winds weren’t too high. I left early and didn’t get a chance to go back and check. However, I’ve heard that all of the museum pieces have once again been moved back down to the P1 level of the tower and the part open to the public is once again empty. The two coaster seats that were up there were sitting in the emergency elevator. I have no idea what is going on with the tower, but I’ll keep trying to get up there to find out.

The security lines were so busy, they even opened up the lines around the corner. Notice there is nobody in the Discover line? That’s an awesome perk:

I was one of about 10 people in the Discover line. The rest of the entrance was stuffed:

Not to be critical, but I don’t understand why the park seems to do certain things with less than 100% effort. This next sign is a perfect example. It’s a nice sign, and I’m sure Wonka paid lots of money to have it displayed, but it’s just hanging there flopping in the wind. The top is secured nicely with the four grommets, but nothing on the bottom. There’s obviously nothing to attach the bottom to, so it looks like they tried using a zip tie through the side of the banner to secure it to that horizontal bar. Of course, it just slid towards the middle, folding the banner in the process, and the bottom is still just hanging there. Things like this tell me that someone doesn’t take any pride in the work they do:

I was surprised when they let the Discover line in almost 15 minutes early today. As you can see, the employees are still having their pre-opening meeting:

The exterior of the old Boardwalk Arcade building has been removed. This will be the queue for Lex Luthor: Drop of Doom. It looked like guys were working on the HVAC:

In addition to the entire front, the awning that went down the side is also gone:

Not much new on the Daily Planet Gift Shop besides a couple new light connections. All of the graphics are starting to peel off of the construction wall. I’m sure it won’t be long before kids start ripping them off as they walk by. I hope they fix this:

Another light connection on the side:

It looks like the backside may have gotten some new plywood sheathing:

I was surprised to see so many construction people working on a Saturday:

As I was walking through the parking lot, the beeping from this forklift caught my attention and then I saw the guy in the blue hardhat. It took me a second before I realized that they were working on a massive new piece of Lex Luthor that just arrived:

I actually had to backup quite a bit to get it all in the frame. This massive piece of blue steel goes from where you see the flat flange on the left by the fire hydrant, all the way down, about 20 feet beyond where the forklift is. It’s huge:

This is a close-up of the flange attached to the end of the giant piece of steel. There are also a series of brackets attached to both sides, most of the way along the beam:

I think I counted 18 pair of brackets along the side of the big piece. There is a similar piece right behind it, also with brackets, but it’s not nearly as big. It only stretches from the left to about where the guy in the blue hardhat is standing:

I saw these red pieces, but I couldn’t get close enough to tell what they were:

These red and blue pieces also caught my attention. I think they’re some sort of shock absorber or dampener. If you look closely at the ends, which are wrapped in plastic, they look like pistons that would attach to something. There two different sizes:

Both gondolas have been taken somewhere, but I’m not sure where. I’m assuming they are in the maintenance building where they can finish assembling them:

Six Flags Magic Mountain Trip Report 07 Apr 2012

I saw lots of new pallets of parts lying around. In fact, I think that’s what the two guys were doing with the forklift, moving stuff around to get it organized:

Moving on to other changes in the park, it looks like Totally Kickin’ Chicken finally got a new sign on the side of the building. Unfortunately, it’s not quite what I was expecting. Another floppy banner…really? <sigh> I seriously hope this is just temporary:

Six Flags Magic Mountain Trip Report 07 Apr 2012

Still no signage on the new Dogs & Snacks building. However, they did have this sitting out front. They must think that is what ‘WTF’ stands for. I’m surprised they didn’t put the name on the sign, unless the name on the map isn’t what they end up going with:

I couldn’t help but notice they had the overflow queue stanchions up for Tatsu and they went down the back of the hill. I like Tatsu, but that’s way too long of a wait for me:

Six Flags Magic Mountain Trip Report 07 Apr 2012

I don’t like ads all over the park, but I know they’re a necessary evil. I can tolerate them as long as they aren’t too obnoxious, like wrapping an entire coaster train. When I saw this, it made me smile. It was unexpected, caught my eye, looks nice, and I thought it was an extremely clever placement. I just hope we don’t start seeing them every ten feet:

Absolutely no change the the former Log Jammer area, other than a new resident:

Six Flags Magic Mountain Trip Report 07 Apr 2012

It was nice to see lots of people in the park again. As much as I like it empty and all to myself, I know that doesn’t keep the doors open:

Six Flags Magic Mountain Trip Report 07 Apr 2012

There were lots of people waiting to get their picture taken with the various characters:

Six Flags Magic Mountain Trip Report 07 Apr 2012

Speaking of characters, what’s up with the old Batman suit? I’ve only ever seen the newer, Dark Knight costume used. Do they switch it up? This looks like Adam West:

OK, so other than a few Spring Break signs around the park, what was special about Spring Break Week? Where there any special events held that I missed?

I know some that went Friday and said packed… even Jet Stream had a wait! Tatsu did end up using that extra queue. Speaking of that, I have waited in that total of 2 1/2 hrs summer it opened. Was totally worth it!

I haven’t been out to the park since February. Once spring break is over, I’ll try and take a trip over there.

I like the old Batman suit. I wish Warner Bros. could get the rights to the 60s Batman show so they could do more with that series, like events and DVD releases.

Was X2 closed on Saturday too? It was closed all day on Friday, but I never got a specific reason why.

I didn’t specifically go over by X2, but I’m pretty sure I saw the trains on the track.

would there be a chance for superman to be open by the 23rd?

    • Kurt

      04/08/2012 at 5:53 pm

Superman won’t reopen until the construction of Lex Luthor is complete. If you’re talking about April 23rd, there is no chance. If you’re talking about May 23rd, maybe but probably unlikely.

ThemeparkPOVs ask that it will reopen in May 18th

    I’m going on 4/19/2012.
What do you think the crowds will be like that day?
    I’m hoping for short lines.

    • Kurt

      04/10/2012 at 8:55 am

To be honest with you Tamara, I don’t like to guess which days will be busy and which days won’t. There are too many variables that come into play and I’m just terrible at it, so I don’t even try. I’m sorry. Anyone else reading this want to help her out?

It should be very empty. I went yesterday and Tatsu was a 20 minute wait. That was the longest wait in the park, other than Green Lantern (30 minutes). So it shouldn’t be bad.

Grrrrrrrr. WTF is going on here.
