Lex Luthor: Drop Of Doom Construction Update #7

By on 06/24/2012

Six Flags Magic Mountain Lex Luthor Drop of Doom Logo

OK, I know I said my next Lex Luthor: Drop of Doom update wouldn’t be until the Media Preview on Thursday, but I couldn’t wait. I’ve been hearing about all the testing going on over at Six Flags Magic Mountain and I wanted to go see if I could catch a test drop. While I didn’t get to see a drop, I did manage to see the gondolas being raised and lowered a bit. Below is everything else new since last Thursday.

I just had to take a photo of the tower as I approached it. The sky was nice and blue and I was all alone in the park, having gotten in early through the Discover entrance:

I noticed right away that the cables for the work carts had been removed:

Six Flags Magic Mountain Lex Luthor: Drop of Doom

I also noticed that the directional signs had been installed:

With the LexCorp logo having been installed atop the queue building, I’m guessing that it’s finally complete:

Close-up of the logo:

All of the freshly installed concrete has been sealed:

We now have proof that the LexCorp Weapons Training Facility is a slingshot game:

You use massive slingshots to shoot balls through the holes in the targets:

Prizes include capes and big plush superhero dolls:

Lots of work still being done around the base of the ride. I also spot a bracket for a TV monitor, so that tells me that part of the wait will be outside, exposed to the roar of the Superman cars as they pass overhead:

The exit path has gotten some new rails and plants:

I’m curious if they are going to do anything special with this, like they did with Green Lantern, since it’s dead center in the middle of the entire new Lex Luthor area:

As I was taking pictures, I noticed that the gondola started to rise:

Six Flags Magic Mountain Lex Luthor: Drop of Doom

They only took it up about 40′ or so before gently lowering it back down:

I’m guessing that with the addition of the baskets on the catch cars, we aren’t going to see any stickers. The LexCorp logo will probably be the only branding:

Six Flags Magic Mountain Lex Luthor: Drop of Doom

I didn’t notice it at first, but both sides now have a basket on the catch car:

The new backstage fence finally got a paint job and it does blend in rather nicely:

Six Flags Magic Mountain Lex Luthor: Drop of Doom

Just above the backstage fence you can see there is a new fence being installed around the base of the ride:

Six Flags Magic Mountain Lex Luthor: Drop of Doom

The work cart cables have also been removed from the other side of the tower:

Six Flags Magic Mountain Lex Luthor: Drop of Doom

From behind the ride, you can see that the new fence starts at the door that exits the back of the queue building:

Six Flags Magic Mountain Lex Luthor: Drop of Doom

It wraps all the way around the ride:

Six Flags Magic Mountain Lex Luthor: Drop of Doom

Here is the section they were working on while I was there:

Six Flags Magic Mountain Lex Luthor: Drop of Doom

Can’t really see it, but this is the basket that was added to the second gondola:

The water dummies are all lined up and ready to be put on the ride for testing:

The section of awning that was missing on Thursday has finally been attached:

Six Flags Magic Mountain Lex Luthor: Drop of Doom

The electricians were hard at work installing light fixtures in the queue line:

Six Flags Magic Mountain Lex Luthor: Drop of Doom

The rails around the perimeter of the ride have been installed:

Six Flags Magic Mountain Lex Luthor: Drop of Doom

The electricians were also wiring up speakers around the entire base of the tower:

This guy was grinding something and sparks were flying everywhere. My guess is that he was smoothing out the welds on the newly installed rails:

Six Flags Magic Mountain Lex Luthor: Drop of Doom

It’s a little thing, but I’m glad to see they extended the building accent down the back of the new façade. Even though most people won’t notice it, I’m glad to see they took the time to do it and make it look complete:

I didn’t get all the video clips that I thought I did. I have also come to the conclusion that I’m in serious need of a new video camera. Although it is HD, the little pocket model I have does not do a very good job. However, here’s what everything looked like today:

SFMMCrazy just notified me that he has video of full drop testing from later in the day, after I left. I’ll post a link to it as soon as I get it.

hi kurt, im going to SFMM on the morning on july 2nd and i was wondering if i should run to x2, or run to lex luthor. i know how everyone ussally runs to x2, but this is 2 days after LLDOD opens! what do i do! help! i could run to another ride…….. (i will be there when the park opens)

I’m afraid I can’t answer that for you, AJ. It depends on what ride you are most excited about and want to ride first. If you want to experience Lex Luthor, you should do that first. The lines are going to be long and it has a very low capacity, so wait times are also going to be very long.

If I were you I’d run to Lex Luthor. Its line will probably be longer than X2’s, since you’ll be there only 2 days after the ride opens.

i posted that video for you ^^^

    06/25/2012 at 12:04 am

I didn’t count 5 seconds at all. Unless the video played it fast or something.

    06/25/2012 at 12:23 am

According to that video, it appears that the riders will be dropped less than 400 feet. Considering that the tower is 415 feet tall, it appears that the gondola is quite a ways below that level—maybe 30-40 feet lower. Perhaps this is just part of the testing and the riders will be taken a bit higher.

    • Someone

      06/25/2012 at 3:46 am

Sadly, no. The catch cars go that high. But hey, it’s still 10 feet higher than giant drop!

    • Zac

      06/25/2012 at 9:46 am

That defintley was not the top. They go a little bit higher.

        06/25/2012 at 3:36 pm

Thanks Kurt for the Update, Love the progress. Also, to the poster for sharing the Video. My criticsims after viewing the video, are that I’m wondering if that basket or platform on top of the catch car was not there, you’d be at least 15 or 10 feet taller. Every foot counts. I also dont understand why the part of the gondola inbetween the riders and catch car had to be as long as it was. Especially given that the name Lex Luthor is not even written on the gondola as was previously advertised, is not even there. Job well done though by the crew on the ride, It will be a treat to see this baby go up the Tower and then Drop. Kudos to the gondolas dropping down the Tower so fast. I barely counted a few seconds, let alone the 5 they say it will take to drop down.

On the otherhand, 380-400 feet is very high up there for any ride. I Live in Chicago, and when sailing on the Lake, I always see the Hyatt Hotel which is 33 stories by the Lake looks more like 500-700 feet when standing by it and looking at it. Maybe you wont be able to really tell the difference on Lex Luthor, and when your up there, the world will most likely look small.

Due to the ride not going up as high up the tower as expected, and also to the basket on top of it and that long piece inbetween riders and the catch car, are they going to make it a longer drop? for instance, instead of starting to brake when at 100 feet or so, will they slow us down at 50 or 40 feet instead? It’s what they should do.

        • Eric

          06/25/2012 at 8:44 pm

After doing some thinking, I believe I may have a theory as to why the top part of the gondola is so long. When you think about it, this is really a wheeled vehicle following a vertical track. Having a “longer wheelbase,” if you will, gives the gondola more stability as it glides down the track. If it were too short, the whole thing could wobble somewhat, which I’m sure would make for an uncomfortable–and perhaps, dangerous–ride.

          • Kurt

            06/25/2012 at 10:35 pm

That sounds logical to me. I was also thinking it also might have something to do with the braking system.

            06/26/2012 at 3:26 pm

Thanks! Great answer to my question and makes some sense. No more complaints from me. So long as the ride is being tested, all ready to go and is safe, then all should be good.

As I said just above, 380-400 feet is very tall and the only 2 rides exceed both Superman & Lex Luthor are King Da Ka in NJ, and Top Thrill Dragster in Cedar Point. Nothing Shamefull coming behind in 3rd place to those 2 rides.

Thanks again, and Looking foward to an 8th update, very possibly when Lex Luthor opens.

great update! I was standing next to a churro cart across from ll:dod today around 7:30, and they dropped right in front of me! I got chills and my heart stopped. I honestly cant wait to ride this monster!

Thanks for the update, Kurt. I’m always impressed with the content and quality of your updates. I’m so excited to ride it on the 30th! I love the queue and station area, especially the wonderful landscaping they did around the base of the tower. Although I’m sure that on Saturday, the landscaping won’t be the only thing I’m raving about!

Will they be testing the gondolas rising and drooping with the superman cars running?

    • Kurt

      06/25/2012 at 7:44 pm

I think it’s safe to say that they will indeed test with both rides going at the same time.

    06/25/2012 at 3:35 pm

Hey Kurt, nice update but quick question, are the cages gonna stay on the cart? Or is that something that they will eventually remove in a year or so? After a year I have noticed a few differences to Green lantern’s cars, is that something that may occur here if the cages remain up top?

    • Kurt

      06/25/2012 at 7:47 pm

I’m sure they’re permanent. I’m hearing they’re standard for this type of ride, allowing maintenance personnel an easy way to inspect the track and get to the top of the tower. They will not affect the ride one bit because they are not part of the gondola.

      • Will P.

        06/26/2012 at 3:56 pm

Your right Kurt, I think they are permanent, because they are present on Australias Giant Drop as well. Funny though, they are not on the Giant Drop at Six Flags Great America in Gurnee IL. That could be to do with Giant Drop in Gurnee not being high enough, to need those cages. Who knows. If you look closely at the pics on this 7th Update, it looks clear to me that the cages are attached to the catch car. That could be the lone reason the cages above the gondolas are not going anywhere and anytime soon.

    Hey Luis,
The Giant Drop at Dreamworld in my home town has the same basket things on top of it. They use them regularly on test runs before the park opens and when they do annual maintenance as an easier way up then taking the stairs. I highly doubt that they would ever remove them.

  15. Ron

    06/25/2012 at 9:54 pm

Hey kurt, do you think they’re going to add the overhead shade like the one at dreamworld and the lex luthor introduction video?

    • Kurt

      06/25/2012 at 10:38 pm

I was thinking it was more for protection from things falling from above rather than shade. My guess is yes, they will be added before Thursday.

I just got off of work(I work at Viper) and they had the gondolas about three quarters of the way up the tower for about an hour after the park closed and as I was walking under superman I heard the cars launch and make their way up the tower, there was maintenance workers sitting in the front rows I guess looking at something as they went up and the park was really quit they had turned off all the music and you could hear the tower creaking as the superman cars came back down. There was at least 20 workers at the bottom looking up it was pretty cool watching the cars go up while the gondolas were up there.

    • Myles

      06/26/2012 at 12:35 am

that sounds scary and awesome at the same time. I never had the chance to see the Superman tower move :/.
