I got to wondering whether this is the original 1974 ride or if it’s been replaced by a newer model (the Scrambler reportedly was replaced at some point, as was the original Billy the Squid/JollyMonster). Also, I know I mentioned it somewhere, but originally these Round Up rides went nearly vertical. Ones that operated at carnivals in the ’70s used to get that way–and this one did at first as well. Of course it only gets up to about 45° now.

They replaced the old Scrambler because it was damaged from an uprooted tree in 2003. The park got the other Scrambler from Six Flags Over Texas.

And by the way, the jolly monster was replaced because it had a malfunction that couldn’t be fixed.

There’s a ride at Dream World Australia, called the “Claw”. Any chance we could get something like that at Magic Mountain? Certain Carnivals have a much smaller version of this ride called “Freak Out”.
