Six Flags Magic Mountain Trip Report For 17 Feb 2013

By on 02/17/2013

Holiday weekends typically generate a pretty good turnout at Six Flags Magic Mountain, and this President’s Day weekend was no exception. I didn’t visit the park yesterday, but I heard from readers of this site that it was very busy. I did go today, and it was pretty busy as well, but not uncomfortably so. This trip report is from 17 Feb 2013.

The crowd in the entrance plaza reminded me of a summer day. I snapped this photo about 15 minutes before the main gate opened and the crowds were already backed up past the metal detectors. It didn’t help that the back half of the plaza already had a pretty large crowd lined up for the season pass registration. I’m not sure why that was so busy:

I’m not sure if they changed their name to “Zero Flags” for the day, but there wasn’t a single flag flying as I walked into the Six Flags Plaza. This really surprised me considering that it was President’s Day weekend. I was expecting to see those six American flags flying high:

I briefly saw a marking on one of the Orient Express cars (trains?) last weekend, but I didn’t give it much thought. After somebody asked me about it, I took another look today. There are definitely some new measurements marked out on one of the cars. This is what I saw down low, towards the bottom of the car, underneath the lower compartment:

I caught a few more markings as the car pulled out of the station. I’m hoping these are measurements for new sheet metal. This ride is original to the park from 1971, and as you can see in both pictures, there is quite a bit of rust all over it. Some parts are even completely rotted away. It could stand to use a fresh coat of skin. Of course, it’s also possible these measurements are for advertising. I can totally see them adding a Full Throttle wrap:

I entered the park through the Gold Pass entrance, so I got into the park 10 minutes early. By the time I got to the top of the Sky Tower, it was probably around 10:40 am and there was still a very solid flow of cars entering the park:

The first parking lot was already full and they were funneling cars down to the second lot:

By 10:50 am, the lower Tatsu queue was almost filled:

Somebody also asked me last week what was going on with one of the Colossus trains. I took a peek today and it just looked like a train was getting a rehab:

The only question I have is, do they actually do the rehabs right there on the transfer track? I always assumed the trains were removed and taken back to the maintenance warehouse for this kind of work on coasters without their own maintenance area. The removed car shells were sitting over on the unused track. It’s interesting to see how dirty the front of the middle cars get. The top is nice and clean from where people’s hands are touching it all day long:

It was an absolutely gorgeous day today, with the temperatures in the mid-70’s. Many of the trees are in bloom, including this one in front of Jet Stream. Look at that blue sky:

Today’s lunch, courtesy of the Six Flags Season Dining Pass, was a pulled pork sandwich from JB’s Smokehouse BBQ. The tri-tip sandwich I had there a couple of weeks ago was cold, dry, and way over cooked. Add to that an oversized dried out bun and it wasn’t a very good meal. This sandwich was warm, had just the right amount of sauce, and the bun was very soft. The kettle chips were also very tasty. If you like BBQ pork, I recommend this sandwich:

With a new roof and a new paint job, the Coaster Candy Company finally got its sign back:

Now that it’s gotten a new roof, the Coaster Candy Company is also getting a brand new air conditioning system. It looks like they’re still in the process of putting it all together:

All references to Ben & Jerry’s have finally been removed from the exterior of their old building. You can still see them on the inside, but one step at a time:

Maybe it’s just me not paying attention, but I seem to stumble quite a bit as I walk through the park. Now granted, my head is constantly surveying everything around me, except the ground, as I make my pass through the park. Have you ever noticed how bumpy the ground is? Between tree roots, uneven bricks, broken concrete, drainage gullies  and sloppy repair work, you really need to watch where you’re walking. After another stumble over a lump in the ground today, I looked down and saw an uneven patch of asphalt repair. Some repairs don’t even match the area around where the repair was done. Where’s the consistency? Look at how many different ground colors there are just in this next photo:

In my first comment above, I mentioned that the season pass registration line was backed up pretty good. On my way out of the park, I couldn’t help but notice that they ended up opening up the older registration center inside the park to help ease the line. This next photo shows the door next to the Will Call office that they use to pass people from the season pass registration line in the entrance plaza to the secondary registration center inside the park. You can see how backed up the primary line is by looking through the doorway:

I hate to be a tease, but I saw the Tatsu wrap that went on one of the new tram buses today. I can’t wait for you guys to see it. I think you’re going to like it.

Great stuff .. this is the kind of trip report I enjoy the most. Of course I like any news but with BBQ in it .. oh baby now were talking.

I’m still on the fence about “bumper cars” and going the wrong direction, did you grab your sandwich and take it over there to those benches and watch the bumper cars or just heard the person scolding the guest as far as one direction only. I’m all for a good head on crash as I think back to yesteryear that was the whole play. Now SFMM bumper cars all going one direction is useless and seemingly only allowed to sort of sideswipe the other cars.

I was sitting outside of JB’s, but I could easily hear the PA across the midway. Rubbing up against the sides of other cars just doesn’t appeal to me. If people were getting hurt driving any direction they wanted, then either the cars were going too fast or the safety equipment wasn’t adequate. It’s really a shame how litigious our society has become.

Well, come to Germany! A country you can do as you like(even stand on the rims) while riding bumpercars(plus the music/special fx are way better anyhow)

I rode Sandblasters yesterday and they did announce over the PA at least once that “Sandblasters is a one way street” while I was on the ride. I don’t understand why they do this.

The car shell sitting on the unused track has been shifted since last week. Last week, the shell was much closer to the station than is was today.

I think it’s kind of a hit and miss with JB’s BBQ. Sometimes the food is freshly made and others its gross and dry.

How come Lex Luthor isn’t at the top of the page?

At the top of what page?

      It’s not a coaster.

Maybe They’ll be Putting a Full Throttle Wrap On The Colossus Trains!

Why are they putting a Tatsu wrap on the tram?

    • The Coaster Guy

      02/20/2013 at 3:39 pm

Probably because its a really popular coaster. It’s considered by many to be the best flying coaster in the world.
