Six Flags Magic Mountain Trip Report For 22 Feb 2014

By on 02/22/2014

I have family coming to stay with us tonight, so instead of my usual Sunday trip to Six Flags Magic Mountain, I decided to head over on a Saturday. Also, tomorrow is the first “Bring A Friend Free” day for 2014, so it’s likely to be packed. It was pretty busy today for the off season, but nothing unbearable. I didn’t ride any roller coasters, so I’m not really sure what the lines were like.

As I approached the ticket booths, I noticed they had a VIP check-in table setup over on the side. I’m not positive what it was for, but I do have an idea that I’ll explain in a bit:

I got to the main gate around 10:15 am and imagine my surprise when there was nobody waiting to get in! The gates were already open and everyone was inside the park. I asked the guy at the gate and he said that since they only had half the normal gate capacity, they started letting people in around 10:00 am:

Six Flags Magic Mountain is currently in the process of installing biometric finger scanners at the entry gate. In a nutshell, Six Flags will take a scan of the unique measurements of each season passholder’s finger (not a fingerprint) and use that to allow entry on all future visits. I’ll do another write-up shortly that explains the whole system in detail. The new gates should be installed in the coming weeks:

I freaked out when I saw how long the line was for Orient Express:

As I continued up the hill towards X2, I quickly realized that people were being let through the main gate early, but they were being kept within the main plaza area until 10:30 am. It was just like Disney does at their parks with the infamous rope drop:

I headed back the other way to go see where the line was on the other side and it was just in front of the Full Throttle Plaza:

As I walked up the Baja Ridge hill, I was surprised to see that the Revolution queue was full and there was already a line across the bridge:

Sign? What sign? Hey, who put this barricade in the way? That’s ok, I’ll just move it myself:

I did ask the park today about what’s going on with the Sky Tower. They said they’re doing extensive work to the elevators. It’ll be a lengthy project, but it will eventually re-open:

Some of the Scrambler pieces are starting to make their way back to the ride area sporting a new color. It’s a cream color now, instead of the yellow, grey, and red that it was before:

More Scrambler pieces off to the side:

As I was walking towards Riddler’s, I noticed the entrance to the Fright Fest maze Aftermath was open, so I peeked inside. You really don’t ever get to see that in the daylight:

Batman was closed. The sign says it’s closed for technical difficulties, however I’m hearing from park employees that they are mounting the backwards running trains:

There were roughly 15 school buses in the parking lot when I arrived, but I didn’t know why. Once inside, I started to see lots of kids all dressed up in suits and dresses:

As it turns out, there was a Future Business Leaders of America event held at the park today. I was told there were 1,500 kids in attendance. I suspect this was what the VIP check-in table was for out front, by the ticket booths:

Many schools from the Mission Valley region were in attendance and some even had displays setup in front of the Golden Bear Theater:

The new entrance to Bugs Bunny World is mostly complete, minus the actual sign. The barricades are down and people are free to use it now:

Tweety’s Escape looks complete in its new home. It even got a new yellow cover:

The ride now has multicolored bulbs whereas they were all white before:

Isn’t that just the cutest little CFL you’ve ever seen? I’ve never seen one that small before:

I met some new friends of the site today. Gary and his daughter Alyssa were enjoying a father/daughter day of fun in the park:

I’m not sure what’s going on with the teacup ride. Not only has there not been any visible work been done on it for weeks, but now a lot of the parts are covered in plastic bags:

SFMM_TR_20140222_21

Not a lot to show on the Speedy Gonzales Hot Rod Racers site, but the dirt is nice and flat now:

Lots of banging could be heard inside Mooseburger, but still not much to see yet:

So my sole gripe for this visit (you knew I’d have one) was the wait for food service. There were only three people in front of me at High Octane Wings, yet it took almost 20 minutes to get my food. What I didn’t realize was that the 7-8 people all standing off to the side had already paid and were  waiting for their food. There was one cashier and one guy assembling the orders. It was during the lunch hour and they obviously needed more help.

After about 10 minutes, I finally got to the window to place my order. It was a single basket of wings on the dining pass, but she couldn’t get it to scan. She tried to enter it manually, but that wasn’t working either. She had to go find someone to help her. A supervisor (lead?) came out from the back and also couldn’t get it to work. She told me that it wasn’t scanned at the front gate, which is required to get your meal credits for the day. I assured her that it was, as far as I could tell, but how would I know? Either way, it wasn’t my issue to resolve. She ended up writing down my name and card information to enter later and said they would go ahead and get me my food. I almost felt like she felt that she was doing me a favor. Don’t get me wrong, she was very nice, but somehow made me feel like I was at fault for something.

Once that was over, I was asked to step aside, with everyone else that had already paid, so the cashier could take more orders. I felt sorry for the guy in the back. He couldn’t keep up with the orders flowing in. After almost another 10 minutes, I finally got my food. Needless to say, it was not a positive experience:

On a more positive note, the gripe I had last week has been resolved. There were tons of bright, shiny umbrellas. I was able to eat my lunch in the shade, which put a smile back on my face:

Don’t forget that tomorrow is the first Bring A Friend Free day. If you have a season pass, make sure you go to http://sixflags.com/pass to activate your benefits. Everything is electronic now and there are no more coupon books. Look for a write-up on this process tomorrow.

Great update! Can’t wait to see how those fingerscanners are going to look. I wonder if they’ll allow people inside if they forget their pass, because you could just scan your finger?

I hope for the best with the new finger scanning system, but, being SFMM, I also expect a glitch or two.

As you said, tomorrow is the first Free Friend day, but I will not be at the park for it. I agreed that it will be fairly crowded.

Once I found out that there is a portal for Six Flags passholders, I set mine up. You can get to it to check your own benefits or sign up for it at https://rewards.sixflags.com.

That’s the same site I provided in the update, Eric. The link I listed redirects to it.

I doubt it will be that bad tomorrow, because there hasn’t been much marketing about the coupons. The whole online thing will confuse everyone.

I have to agree with you, Andrew. I would not have known to sign up for the benefits had I not overheard the guy next to me talking about it while we were waiting in line to get into the park last week.

They had the same meal plan pass-not-scanning problem last weekend. The team at the food-court under Superman was writing names. One gripe I had was: we had previously understood that meals before 3:30 were “lunch” and after 3:30 were “dinner”. At the chicken place in front of the kids area we were told we couldn’t get dinner until 4:30. They close most of the food places in the park at 5:00, so you only had half-an-hour to get dinner. Obviously we missed it. I wonder when that change was made. I haven’t figured out how to get into the on-line pass benefits thingy either.

Underemployment has always been an issue. Ive never seen more than two employees at each full throttle resteraunt. As far as the sky tower goes, it is scheduled to open march 22, but who knows. Im pretty sure universal does the finger print scan.

It doesn’t sound like the Sky Tower will be re-opening in March.

My friend said the website said it should open along with the water rides, though in complete honesty i cant totally trust that guy. :/ we will have to wait and see

Whenever im on a ride that overlooks hurricane harbor, to see a glimpse of construction. Sadly, i havent seen a thing. Though, i have not been looking for slides taken down. I hope not though. Venom Drop is pretty fun.
