Six Flags Magic Mountain Trip Report For 27 Apr 2014

By on 04/27/2014

I stopped by Six Flags Magic Mountain today to see what was new, and to be honest there’s just not that much going on since my last visit. I’m sure there’s a lot going on behind the scenes, but not much that affects park guests. This is a photo trip report from 27 Apr 2014.

Even though the first parking lot wasn’t full yet when I arrived around 10:30 am, the security lines were quite long. Fortunately, I noticed that they were using one of the Express Lanes for people without bags. I politely pointed the sign out to the group of people in front of me, all of whom had bags, and they thanked me and moved over to one of the longer lines. I think this lane needs some barricades, like a ride queue, with a sign at the entrance. I’m happy to report that it moved very quickly and I was very appreciative that it was there:

Once through security, the line to get through the main gate was even more backed up, even though the park had already been open for about 10 minutes:

I made my way over to the Gold Pass line, expecting to find it empty, but it wasn’t, even after already being open for roughly 20 minutes:

After about another 5-10 minutes of waiting, I finally got close enough to see what the issue was. The new biometric scanners were really slowing down the works. A lot of people had paper tickets that either weren’t scanning properly or needed to be processed by the employees. I saw them typing something in on their side of the scanners and then, as you see here, the employee spent time writing something on them while we all waited patiently:

Once I got to the scanner, I got in rather quickly. I scanned my pass, put my finger on the reader, and I was in within a few seconds. I think there is going to be a bit of a learning curve while both the employees and regular guests learn the system. However, there will always be new guests that don’t know what they’re doing. I think the park needs an Express Lane for guests who already have cards and don’t need to be processed for the first time, or at least a special lane for those that do. I felt like I was being punished being stuck behind all the people who were being processed for the first time, and I was in the Gold Pass lane.

Once I got in around 10:50, the midways were very empty as everyone was still at the main gate:

As expected, most people were headed straight to X2 and Viper had virtually no line:

SFMM_TR_20140427_06

There were a lot of lights being installed on the hill under Revolution, presumably for Grad Nites:

SFMM_TR_20140427_07

It was an absolutely gorgeous day when I got there, with temps expected in the upper 70’s:

SFMM_TR_20140427_08

The Sky Tower is still closed. From what I learned talking to park management the other day, the elevators are going through an extensive refurbishment. Since these are not your typical, run of the mill elevators, it’s a very expensive project, almost comparable to new capital investment. There is still no ETA  on when we can expect the tower to be back in operation:

There are lots of new Flash Pass signs showing up around the park:

SFMM_TR_20140427_10

Superman got a new promotional sign, touting it as the world’s first 100 MPH coaster. They placed it in a weird spot, way off to the side, so I almost didn’t even see it:

Good News – Jet Stream was back in action, just in time for a warm day:

SFMM_TR_20140427_13

Bad News – Jet Stream is once again leaking like a sieve all over the midway:

SFMM_TR_20140427_12

All of the flowers have been removed from the planter and the lights are up for the Grad Nites stage about to be assembled in front of DC Universe:

Time for my only gripe of the day. I stopped by Teen Titans Pizza in DC Universe to get a slice of pizza on my Season Dining Pass. The piece they tried giving me was over half crust (I kid you not!). I laughed and asked if they were joking. She had no idea what I was talking about. I said it was all crust and I asked for a different piece. She grabbed another one and it was the same way. She said every single piece they had was like that. I said there was no way I was going to accept that. Fortunately for me, they were having problems running my pass through, which seems to be a recurring theme, and were going to write my name down to enter it later. I asked for my card back and said I was going to eat elsewhere.

I walked over to the Waterfront Commissary and asked for a piece of pizza. I told her that I’d like to see it first, to ensure that this wasn’t a new practice of theirs. It looked much better and I gave her my pass. I swear there was at least 4″ of crust at Teen Titans Pizza. The toppings didn’t even start until about where you see my finger below. What’s worse is that the employees didn’t even care and had no problem giving that to a paying customer. Where are the quality standards? I feel sorry for whoever paid full price and were served that joke of a pizza:

SFMM_TR_20140427_31

On a related note, they must have changed their pizza crust. I used to really like it. There was bits of cheese and garlic and it was really tasty. As you can see above, it’s now hard, dry, bland, and tastes like hardened cardboard. I do not consider it edible and will no longer be getting the pizza there.

Colossus is still running backwards and people are still loving it:

It didn’t take me very long once inside the park and I started seeing lots of young women in uniforms that part of the reason for the crowd was because there was a dance competition today:

SFMM_TR_20140427_21

Unlike other competitions that I’ve seen there, this one didn’t seem to have as many competitors:

SFMM_TR_20140427_20

Not much to show on the new Speedy Gonzales Hot Rod Racers roller coaster installation:

SFMM_TR_20140427_16

A little more work has been done on the Merry Melodies Carousel, but it’s more demolition work. All of the mirrored decorations around the center have been stripped off:

SFMM_TR_20140427_18

Speaking of being stripped off, the Daffy, Sylvester, and Taz characters that were all part of the fountain in Bugs Bunny World have been removed:

SFMM_TR_20140427_17

With all the recent tree clearing in the area, I now see a Bugs Bunny mailbox I never noticed before:

SFMM_TR_20140427_19

All of the lighting has been added to the new Full Throttle Nights stage. Given the popularity of this last year, I’m told that the park has bought this stage and that the installation will be permanent. And now that it’s permanent, there’s a possibility that we may see some monitors eventually show up around the back of this as well:

SFMM_TR_20140427_22

Lots of tables with shade umbrellas, which will definitely get used:

SFMM_TR_20140427_23

As I was leaving the park around 1:00 pm, there was still quite a line of people trying to get through the main gate. I hope they resolve the time it takes to get in soon:

SFMM_TR_20140427_24

One of the Hurricane Harbor splashdown pools is getting some work and a fresh coat of paint:

SFMM_TR_20140427_27

Not sure if they’re new or just coming out of storage, but lots of lounge chairs being readied:

SFMM_TR_20140427_25

As I was standing there, even more were being added to the pile:

SFMM_TR_20140427_26

Not a whole lot to see on the big tower where the new Bonzai Pipeline drop tubes are supposedly going:

SFMM_TR_20140427_28

All of the plastic sheeting is from the fresh coat of shiny black paint that was applied:

SFMM_TR_20140427_29

Can you tell which is which? There’s quite a difference between the old and new paint:

Nice update Kurt, as always. On another note, do you know how much longer Colossus will be running backwards?

I still haven’t been out to get my new season pass card. Hopefully by the time I do get out there, they’ll have resolved this apparent glitch.

At one time, Papa John’s sponsored the pizza, but I don’t know who does now. Regardless, your experience was sad. How could anyone making pizza—and I assume they bake it right there—be so stingy with toppings and not make any effort to fix it? Personally, I’d have brought it up at Guest Relations.

So, Jet Stream is leaking badly, huh? It’s actually older now than Log Jammer was when it was removed, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see it go in the next couple of years. In fact, if they removed both Jet Stream and Ninja, they could free up enough space to put in something really huge. Jet Stream, I wouldn’t miss, though the park really can’t stand to lose another water ride. Ninja would be a serious loss as so few swinging suspended coasters are left operating.

Anyway…I’m due to take a trip out there sometime, as mid-February was the last time I was there. Thank you for the trip report.

JetStream can’t go. They need to build a new flume if they do. I would love to see a new log flume! Also, just curious, when does Six Flags announce the new attractions coming to their parks? August?

Six Flags usually announces following season plans in August… August 2014 will be 2015 season announcement. I’d be interested to find out what Six Flags could be planning in 2015 for its North America parks.

My predictions regarding several Six Flags parks. Six Flags Great America getting 242ft tall SkyScreamer ride. Six Flags Great Adventure, Great Escape, New England, Over Georgia, and Over Texas each receiving new coaster. There’s been speculation regarding Six Flags St. Louis’ The Boss, and Six Flags Magic Mountain’s Colossus wood coasters being candidates for possible RMC hybrid transformation. We’re likely to find out later this summer.

4 inches of crust?!?! Man that’s embarrassing. Hopefully it’ll be changed soon.

Great update. No don’t remove NINJA replace the JET STREAM with a custom built water/roller coaster that goes in and around NINJA.

Where else are these biometric scanners used? I think it was a huge mistake for SFMM to put these in. They should have been tested first, then tested again, then went online. But in typical SFMM fashion, they just went live with them and now paying crowds have to wait.

In regards to HH, I am surprised they actually covering up stuff while they paint. Usually MM just paints and gets it all over the place. Actually, surprised to see them painting anything at all.

Somebody told me that Universal uses a similar system. As for testing, they did test at two other parks during last season. With regards to the painting, can you point me to an example of where they just spill paint all over the place? I don’t recall seeing any signs of this anywhere in the park after they paint something.

My question is do these new generic season pass cards have your name on them? If they don’t how is a family with season passes suppose to know who’s is who’s if they keep them together for safety

Great Site, thanks for the info. Is Revolution back up and running? We’re planning our first ever visit next week.

      05/05/2014 at 2:35 pm

Wes, as of last Thursday, Revolution was closed for the entire day and there were no employees standing in front of the barricades. Also, no visible work was being done on the track or the trains themselves, and the loading station sat empty without a train parked inside.

You can buy the tickets online 5 days in advanced for $42.99 which is WAY better than $67.99 and if you are a AAA member or you have a friend or relative that works at just about any Disney workplace( not sure about Knott’s ) you can get discounts as well.
