Riders Needed For 36-Hour Colossus Marathon At SFMM
Say goodbye to Colossus in a Colossal way! Six Flags Magic Mountain is hosting a 36-hour coaster marathon on Colossus and they’re looking for riders. The Colossus marathon will start on Monday, August 4 at 9 a.m. and will end at 9 p.m. on Tuesday, August 5. If you are interested in participating, please e-mail the park at sixflagsevent@gmail.com and tell them why you want to be one of the 24 participants in this once-in-a-lifetime experience. Each participant will receive a Six Flags 2015 Season Pass. Grand Prize will be four GOLD Passes and extra surprises!
A few key points for the marathon riders:
- Each hour, riders will ride for 45 minutes with a 15 minute break. At 3 a.m., the park will move you to the “other” wooden coaster, Apocalypse, for three hours while Colossus receives its regularly-scheduled maintenance. At 6 a.m., you’ll be back on Colossus to finish the marathon.
- Riders will be required to sign a medical waiver. If rider is under 18 years old, support person must be a parent or guardian and will be required to sign the medical waiver on the rider’s behalf.
- The park will provide regularly-scheduled meals to the riders throughout the marathon. Any special dietary needs are the responsibility of the rider and will be allowed to be brought in.
- Each participant is allowed to bring one “support” person. This person will be asked to wait in an area next to the ride and will be available to supply their marathon rider with any additional food and drink throughout the duration of the marathon.
- Marathon riders will be encouraged to document their marathon experience on social media during the 36 hours. Prizes will be awarded for best posts during the event.
- Additional information will be provided to riders by the park in a follow up e-mail.
Good luck to everyone who applies!

When is the deadline for entries?

Not sure what the deadline is, but I’d get your entries in sooner rather than later!

Are you going to do it Kurt?
I know I could not do any coaster for that long….well, maybe Medusa @SFDK, but that’s it 🙂

OMG…no way! I’m too old. I rode it like 5-6x the other night, over the course of a couple of hours, and I was good. No way I could marathon it, or any coaster for that matter.

I had 2 hours ERT on Maverick at Cedar Point during Coaster Campout and had about 17 laps on it. I would be willing to marathon Colossus, but I’m on the east coast. How rough is Colossus?

For a 36 year old coaster that hasn’t had much work done, it’s not that bad. It’s definitely not as smooth as a steel coaster, but there are a lot worse wooden coasters out there.

It’s bad enough though where it would be easy enought to get a headache on it especially for that long

Why are the doing this? Isn’t 24 hours good enough? I don’t think I could do this…

Colossus just turned 36 years old.

A couple of answers from the park to questions that are coming in: 1) The park will select the riders and start contacting them tomorrow, and 2) The support person cannot ride. They need to be available to assist their rider.

This sounds really tempting, but I think I’m going to sit it out. At 55 and in not-so-great health, I’d better skip it. 🙁

Looks weird it has mailing for gmail account

I think they do that so they can get a somewhat unique email address very quickly w/o having to jump through hoops to get corporate IT to make a vanity address.

I couldn’t do four hours of Colossus last Saturday night, I can’t even imagine what 36 hours of Colossus would be like.
Though, if they ever do a marathon for Tatsu, sign me up!

if you think you guys can keep up with me read my comment in my facebook page clearly some of you are not as young as you used to be so I suggest you sit this one out and leave the riding to me because Colossus has and always will be my baby

Where is this listed on SFMM web site? I cant seem to find it anywhere.
The Coaster Guy

It’s not. As a social media event, they are only spreading the word via a few select web sites that cover the park.

Nooooo!!! I’m gonna be on vacation! I was hoping I could be there to give Colossus a respectable farewell. Oh well, I hope the riders do well!

I was wondering if anyone has received an email from the park with a set of 3 questions? Or if anyone has been chosen yet?

I received the three questions, nothing after it though. Glad I am not the only one without a reply back! Haha.

I haven’t gotten anything back from them yet. Guess by this point I wasn’t one of the lucky few. Did you get an e-mail?
Michael Mountain
07/30/2014 at 8:29 pm
Well kind of, I have only received an email asking if a parent could sign off for me and if I was a resident of Southern California. It also asked if I was an employee. No formal letter though. It seems odd

What does this mean for while the park is open on those two days? Is Colossus closed? Only running one train? Yesterday I saw a newly assembled train on the transfer track, so they may be trying to run 3 trains.
The Coaster Guy
08/01/2014 at 8:02 am
They only have two trains. I suspect one will be dedicated to the marathon and the other one will be for the public.

when did this close? I only saw the announcement 6 hours into it and tried to submit my application, but got an email saying they are not accepting anymore applications. so sad sauce because it was a long, heartfelt request! my heart is crushed about colossus! has the park said when they will announce what exactly is going to happen on the 16th?

From their e-mail: August 16 is National Roller Coaster Day, and with 19 thrilling coasters, we’ve got a lot to celebrate. This special event will be your last day to ride our classic wooden coaster, Colossus. Every rider who rides the legendary beast will receive a free “I was the last to ride the classic woodie” button to proudly show off. Don’t miss your chance to be one of the final riders on the King of Wooden Coasters.
***A free woodie button? Nah, I’ll be going instead to ride Desperado (Buffalo Bills Casino, Primm, NV) — they give free rides on National Roller Coaster Day.***
