Dongpo Kitchen Opens at Universal CityWalk

By on 08/03/2016

Universal CityWalk Hollywood has just unveiled its latest restaurant, Dongpo Kitchen. It’s a Sichuan-style restaurant and the first-ever U.S. casual dining concept from Meizhou Dongpo and its renowned and innovative owners, Chef Gang Wang and his wife, Chef Di Liang. In 2008, Meizhou Dongpo won the prestigious honor of catering the Beijing Olympic Games for thousands of athletes from across the globe within the Olympic Village.

Due to open on August 8th, Dongpo Kitchen is located at the heart of CityWalk in a completely remodeled, artisan-inspired venue tantalizing diners with upscale and modern cuisine within the comforts of a casual environment. We were fortunate enough to get a sneak peek before its grand opening to the public:

The interior is modern and elegant, yet still very casual:

In addition to the indoor seating you see above, you can also dine al fresco in their outdoor patio and enjoy the sights and sounds of CityWalk.

There is nice artwork located throughout, as well as very clever ways to break up the space without resorting to solid walls:

They had a nice sampling of their menu out for us to try:

Morell Marean, SVP of Food Operations for Universal Studios Hollywood, kicked the event off by saying a few words on behalf of the resort:

Some of their signature dishes include Roast Duck Sliders, Meizhou Pork Buns, Bang Bang Chicken, Dan Dan Noodles, Serrano Beef, and Mapo Tofu.

This is their signature Spicy Chicken:

Everything is made fresh to order and the kitchen is visible though a glass window:

Some of the items I sampled were a Meizhou Pork Bun, Dongpo Sausage, Roast Duck Slider, Sichuan String Beans, and Chilled Noodles with Shredded Chicken. Everything was absolutely delicious:

Be forewarned that many of the dishes are quite spicy. I don’t handle spicy food very well, but the staff did an excellent job at telling me what was spicy and what wasn’t. They were very knowledgable about the food and extremely friendly.

Dongpo Kitchen is Meizhou Dongpo’s 131st restaurant, and they already have a handful located through Southern California:

If you find yourself at Universal CityWalk and looking for a place to eat that’s new and different, you should definitely consider Dongpo Kitchen. More information about Universal CityWalk is available at

I know some of you will be saying “This post has absolutely nothing to do with roller coasters,” and you are correct. However, many of you have also been asking me to start covering Universal Studios, which is exactly what I’m going to do. And that includes CityWalk, so be prepared to see more coverage of anything in and around Universal Studios Hollywood. (FYI: Rumor has it a big roller coaster is coming to USH)

Universal is really expanding and becoming an awesome theme park. It will be cool to see your posts covering the park.
