Six Flags Shatters Guinness World Record for Mistletoe Kisses

By on 12/11/2016

On Saturday, December 10, Six Flags parks across the country joined forces during their annual Holiday in the Park event to set a new Guinness World Record for the most couples kissing under the mistletoe. Six Flags Magic Mountain was one of the parks participating, and I was there as an official witness to see history made. They not only broke the record, they completely shattered it! Six Flags Over Georgia set the record in 2015 with 402 people puckering up and kissing. This year, Six Flags had 1,678 people, or a whopping 838 couples, kiss under the mistletoe!

Couples had to pre-register for the event. When they arrived at Magic Mountain, all they had to do was check-in, show their ID, and get in line to be ushered into the theatre where the record attempt was going to be held:

I was impressed with how many couples showed up for this! In addition to those who pre-registered, many park guests saw what was going on and wanted to participate as well. There was a stand-by line that was formed. Unfortunately, there were many more people who wanted to participate than could be accomodated, so the official count wasn’t as big as it could’ve been. That just means that any future attempt should easily set another world record. Here is the line of couples who were already checked-in and ready to enter the theatre:

As the lead witness, one of my responsibilities was to ensure that the sprigs of mistletoe being used were at least six inches in length. No problem there:

As couples entered the theatre, they were escorted down to the stage and lined up in a secure area. The rules for setting a Guinness World Record are very strict and Six Flags was following them to the letter:

The Coca-Cola bear was even on hand to witness the record setting event:

This couple was getting a little practice in, with many spectators closely watching:

At exactly 2:15 pm PST, each couple locked lips and held the kiss for at least 10 seconds:

“Holiday in the Park is a beloved family tradition and what better way to ring in the holidays than kisses under the mistletoe. Six Flags is home to a long list of record-breaking roller coasters and now we have a brand new record to kiss and tell about.” – Tom Iven, Six Flags Senior Vice President of U.S. park operations

“Six Flags really outdid itself this year by making history and celebrating the holidays by bringing people together from coast to coast to set a new world record for the most couples kissing under the mistletoe.” – Christina Conlon, GuinnessWorldRecords Adjudicator
