Right now, we don’t have a lot of details to share. We have confirmed the date of June 5th with the park. We know there will be ERT on The New Reolution, at least one backstage tour, and an included lunch. More details will be coming in January. We just wanted to get this on everyone’s calendar so they save the date.

I’m thinking they’re going to refurbish Revolution and not add anything new. But that’s just a guess! 😉

Saturday, September 12th is their annual Hallelujah Jubilee celebration, a Christian music event, so the park will likely be extremely crowded. Sunday will probably be crowded as well, but not as much. A Flash Pass on these two days will probably be a good idea and give you a much more enjoyable experience. You probably won’t need one for Monday. The crowds will be much lighter and you’ll have already been on most of the rides, multiple times, from having a Flash Pass for two days. The time reduction on the Platinum is excellent, but so is the Gold, typically much better than the 50% they advertise. You don’t always get the full benefits of the Platinum pass, like back-to-back rides, so I always recommend the Gold. The only time you’ll need the Platinum is if you want to use it on Twisted Colossus, Full Throttle, or Superman. You’ll also need it for X2, but be advised there is an additional fee for that. I hope that helps!

SFMM has been getting a new roller coaster every other year: 2011 (Green Lantern), 2013 (Full Throttle), and 2015 (Twisted Colossus). If that pattern holds, then we should probably expect some sort of flat ride. However, other than Lex Luthor, SFMM hasn’t shown much interest in adding new flat rides. If the new Larson Giant Loops that Six Flags is adding to four other parks this year proves to be successful, I could see SFMM adding one of those. Although technically a flat ride, it’s been marketed as a coaster, so SFMM could use it to up their coaster count once again. With the ride basically being a giant circle, I’m already envisioning the SFMM marketing materials promoting their unprecedented “20th” coaster with a picture of the loop as the ‘zero’ in “20th.”

    Hi Marc,

Body types, especially height and weight, seem to play a big factor in comfort level on many coasters. For example, at 6’1″ tall, my head gets banged up pretty good inside the OTSRs on Revolution, Viper, and Riddler’s Revenge. I’ve also heard from some heavier people that Green Lantern can be very uncomfortable to ride. However, there are also stories from people the same size that don’t have any issues at all and actually like those coasters. Apocalypse is getting a bit rough to ride as well, but some people like that. There’s no ride at SFMM that I will tell you to completely stay away from. I think you need to ride them all and form your own conclusions on what you like and don’t like. It’s all about personal preference. -Kurt

I’ve never been stopped on or seen a stop on CS. I’ve never been stacked on it, either. I remember reading about somebody’s backpack falling out of a train and initiating an emergency stop about a year or so ago, but that was an isolated incident. It’s about one of the most efficiently operated coasters I’ve ever seen.

This ride looks like it’s right up my alley! I can’t wait for my first visit to Carowinds someday so I can experience it. This is one of the downsides to living on the West coast, being so far away from so many amazing parks and coasters.

I obviously get asked this question a lot, and I always say that it’s like asking somebody who their favorite child is. You love them all for different reasons. However, since my favorite coaster elements are speed and height, I will say that Superman: Escape from Krypton, Full Throttle, and Goliath are a few of my favorites at Magic Mountain. Of course, I wouldn’t be much of an adrenaline junkie if I didn’t mention X2 as well, simply for the thrill factor.

    Hi Storm,

As much as I’d love to see a parking garage at SFMM, I don’t think it’ll ever happen. It’s simply too expensive and Six Flags (corporate) would never spend that amount of money on anything, not even a ride. I wrote a guest article on this very topic several years ago for my friend The Coaster Critic. You can find it on his web site here:
    http://www.thecoastercritic.com/2011/12/why-arent-there-more-parking-garages-at-theme-parks.html

Give it a read and let me know your thoughts.

Good find! I had actually read about that years ago, but forgot all about it. Thanks for the post!

I’m not sure those cars could even round a tophat with those steel wheels, at least not a tight one like Kingda Ka. But I suspect the real limitation would be bending that steel track into a tight enough radius for a tophat. I’m sure that’s why Kingda Ka has tubular steel and traditional trains.

These are all really good questions, Axel, and I honestly don’t know the answers to them yet. Running forums is new to me and I’m learning as I go. As I get more familiar with the software, I’ll try and post more information about what is and isn’t possible, as well as basic information on how to post.

I really wish Superman was a full circuit coaster like Kingda Ka, instead of just a shuttle coaster, but I’ll take what I can get. It’s fast, it’s high, and it’s fun!

I think there is a lot of work going on in the plaza that we just can’t see. I know that concrete has been ripped out and replaced and the Twisted ‘Wiches sandwich shop is also being worked on. I think they’re just going to redo the façade on the theater, so that won’t take very long at all and will likely be one of the last things done.

Yes, Colossus could’ve bene left as is, but there still wouldn’t be anybody riding it. As Twisted Colossus, it’ll draw huge crowds and give X2, Full Throttle, and Goliath a reprieve from the long lines. The coaster just got another 20+ years of life out of the deal.
